Uses

This medication is a cephalosporin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections (e.g., middle ear, skin, urine and respiratory tract infections).
Cefaclor is effective against susceptible bacterias causing infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. It is also used in treating urinary tract infections, and skin infections.

How to take

Take this medicine with a full glass of water. Cefaclor works best if you take it with a meal or within 30 minutes of a meal.
Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. Breaking the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.

Side effects

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Ceclor.
Side effects of Ceclor may include:
Diarrhea, hives, itching

Precaution

Before taking cefaclor, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to penicillin or other cephalosporin; or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: severe kidney disease, intestinal disease (colitis). This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug interactions

Avoid using antacids within 1 hour before or after taking cefaclor. Antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb cefaclor.
Cefaclor should be avoided by patients with known allergy to cephalosporin type antibiotics. Since cefaclor is chemically related to penicillin, an occasional patient can have an allergic reaction (sometimes even anaphylaxis) to both medications. Treatment with cefaclor and other antibiotics can alter the normal bacteria flora of the colon and permit overgrowth of C. difficile, bacteria responsible for pseudomembranous colitis. Patients who develop pseudomembranous colitis as a result of antibiotics treatment can experience diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and sometimes even shock. Probenecid may increase the blood levels of cefaclor. Cefaclor is used by children, even though safe use of this medication in infants has not been established. Cefaclor is not habit forming.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Capsules should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed container. The oral suspension should be stored in the refrigerator in a tightly closed container.
